Photos of an e-scooter ride have been circulating on social media recently, showing the rider sitting on two stacked water crates and riding through a city center. Apparently, e-scooters are sometimes used in large cities to transport not only shopping, but also empty containers, such as beer crates. This seems adventurous, especially since it is not easy to keep your balance. However, the regulator did not have this scenario in mind; the Small Electric Vehicles Ordinance expressly stipulates only that no other person may be transported and no trailer may be operated.

Fines for improper load securing

Nevertheless, it is prohibited to transport beer or water crates on an e-scooter, as there is no way to secure the luggage. Since the crates, placed on the footboard, are clearly not sufficiently secured (Sections 22, 23 (1) of the Road Traffic Regulations), such items may not be transported. A crate of beer or water can easily slide forward, backward, or sideways when braking, causing accidents. Furthermore, the e-scooter is not designed for such a load, as it delays braking performance. This may result in a warning fine, with a point being added to the driver's license register only in the event of danger or property damage.

Permitted transport of luggage on e-scooters

However, legal e-scooter luggage racks are already available on the market, such as a shopping basket with StVO approval that can carry up to 40 kg of additional weight. E-scooter luggage racks can be retrofitted above the rear wheel as well as on the front wheel. A removable front basket can also be installed on the front bar. A new accessory for e-scooters is even a mounting system for suitcases, which makes it possible to securely attach a suitcase to the e-scooter. The transport bracket is attached to the front of the footboard, on which the hard-shell suitcase is placed. The suitcase is also attached to the scooter handle to prevent it from slipping while riding.

If you are facing a fine, it is essential to seek the help of a Lawyer who specializes in traffic law.
