All criminal convictions—not just those relating to traffic offenses—are recorded in the Federal Central Register (BZR). This also includes coercion in traffic, leaving the scene of an accident, and drunk driving. Administrative offenses (speeding, running a red light, parking violations, etc.) are not recorded in the BZR. BZR entries can be viewed by courts and law enforcement agencies, including the police, and can therefore have a negative impact on other proceedings.
The BZR must be distinguished from the certificate of good conduct, which employers often require applicants to submit. This certificate only includes convictions recorded in the BZR for fines of more than ninety daily rates, as well as prison sentences or criminal detention of more than three months.

Neither register should be confused with the driver suitability register maintained by the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Flensburg. This register records the famous points for all traffic violations involving fines of EUR 60 or more. Incidentally, driving time violations are currently not entered in either the BZR or the driver suitability register.
